The 12 step program is considered to be a spiritual program at its heart, using spirituality in the broad sense of the word. Although spirituality is a widely used term, it does not have a widely agreed-upon definition since it can have various religious, psychological, cultural, or personal aspects. The 12 Step program leaves the discovery of the meaning and definition of spirituality up to the individual in recovery.
